NORTH HOUSTON

North Houston and surrounding areas

Conroe

On Oct. 16, 1881, a retired Civil War Illinois Cavalry captain came into Montgomery County from Houston looking for a place to make his mark. His name was Isaac Conroe.

Conroe is the perfect blend of starry nights and city lights. And being the fastest-growing city in Texas, Conroe has so much to offer. Conroe is bordered by 22,000-acre Lake Conroe, Sam Houston National Forest, and W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, making for a veritable utopia for the outdoor lover in us all.

Aside from the outdoors, Conroe has a bustling downtown with breweries, theaters and plenty of shopping. There is also plenty of live music, which has earned Conroe the designation of Music Friendly Community by the state of Texas. Whether you are looking for an adventure or a little rest and relaxation, you will find it in Conroe.

As of 2023, the population was 103,035. Since 2007, the city has increased in size (and population) by annexation, with the city territory expanding from 52.8 to 74.4 square miles. Some communities have attempted to fight such annexation.

WILLIS

Willis is a city in Montgomery County, Texas, United States, located eight miles north of Conroe in north central Montgomery County. The city began to develop in 1870 after what is now the Union Pacific Railroad built a track through the area. As a part of the Piney Woods, the Willis economy has historically been driven by lumber, agriculture, and the manufacture of lumber and agriculture equipment. From the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, it produced tobacco as a commodity crop.

As of 2020, the population of Willis was estimated to be 6,431. In 2008, after Willis’s population passed 5,000, the city established a home rule city charter.
